Ice Dams and Eavestroughs: A Canadian Homeowner's Guide

What an ice dam actually is
Most homeowners picture it correctly: a ridge of ice that builds up at the roof edge, usually along the eaves, and sometimes hangs as dramatic icicles off the soffit. What they often miss is the mechanics. The part of your roof over the heated attic stays above freezing, so snow there melts. That water runs downhill and hits the cold overhang above the exterior wall, where the temperature drops and the water refreezes. More meltwater piles on top, more ice builds at the edge, and the ridge creeps up toward the peak. Snow sitting on that ice acts as insulation and keeps the water liquid long enough to look for somewhere to go, which is usually under a shingle tab.
Once water gets under the shingles, it sits on the wood deck and the real damage begins: stained ceilings, soaked insulation, rot in the roof sheathing, and sometimes rot in the wall framing behind the fascia. None of that is cheap to fix and most of it is invisible until it is well advanced.
What ice dams do to eavestroughs
Your eavestrough is caught in the middle of this process. Expanding and contracting ice puts real mechanical stress on the mounting hardware, and a heavy buildup can bend the trough downward or rip the hangers right out of the fascia board. A trough that has been through a few bad ice-dam winters often ends up pulling away from the fascia, sagging between hangers, or leaking at the seams. That is not just cosmetic: a sagging trough misdirects water and creates pooling that feeds the next freeze cycle.

The real fix is in the attic
Every building scientist, roofer and home inspector will say the same thing: fix the attic first. A well-sealed, well-insulated attic means the roof deck stays cold, snow melts at a slow and uniform rate, and the temperature differential that creates dams never develops. The three things that matter:
- Air sealing. Warm indoor air escaping through pot-light cutouts, plumbing stack penetrations, attic hatches and wall-plate gaps is often the biggest driver of ice dams. Sealing those penetrations cuts off the heat at the source.
- Insulation depth. Older homes across Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Maritimes are frequently under-insulated by current standards. Adding insulation after sealing keeps heat from migrating to the roof deck.
- Ventilation. Soffit vents and a ridge vent allow cold outside air to circulate through the attic cavity and keep the deck temperature even across the whole roof.
This is not eavestrough work, but it is the only intervention that actually solves the problem. Everything else manages the symptom.
Heat cables: a secondary option
Heat cables (also called roof de-icing cables) are resistive wires you run along the roof edge and down through the eavestroughs and downspouts in a zigzag pattern. When active, they melt a channel through the ice so water can drain rather than back up behind the dam. They can reduce damage in specific problem areas, such as a north-facing valley or a long low-slope overhang, where attic work alone is not sufficient.
What heat cables do not do is address the reason the dam forms. You are managing the symptom rather than correcting the cause. They draw electricity continuously when active, so a long Saskatchewan or Ontario winter running cables will show up on the power bill. If cables are already installed on a home you are buying or renovating, have an electrician check the condition of the wiring before the first freeze. Old cables can fail or short.
What eavestroughs have to do with prevention
An eavestrough that is clear and draining freely gives meltwater the fastest possible exit when temperatures climb above zero. A trough packed with leaves from fall is a partially blocked drain, and standing water in a blocked trough refreezes overnight and contributes to the buildup at the roof edge. Keeping the eavestrough clear through fall and into the freeze season is a real, if partial, line of defence.

But a system that keeps debris out means the trough does its job when meltwater shows up, and that matters. Not all guard types handle Canadian winters equally. Lower-cost foam inserts can hold moisture and freeze solid. Coarse screens can ice over at the mesh and trap debris underneath. Professional micro-mesh systems on a rigid frame are better suited to freeze-thaw conditions because the geometry of the mesh sheds ice rather than capturing it. On the spectrum of guard options, foam and basic screens sit at the lower end and professional micro-mesh systems sit at the higher end.
One important sequence: if your eavestroughs have already been bent or pulled away by ice damage, a guard going over compromised troughs is not the right move. Eavestrough replacement comes first, protection second.
When to call a professional
If you have an active ice dam this winter and water is getting into the house, professional ice dam removal is the urgent call. Most reputable services use steam rather than salt or pressure washing, which melts channels without cracking shingles or damaging the roof surface. The long-term work, air sealing, insulation and possibly new eavestroughs, is the follow-up once the emergency is resolved.

Do gutter guards prevent ice dams? Not directly. A gutter guard keeps the eavestrough clear of debris so meltwater drains faster during thaw cycles, and that can reduce the severity of ice buildup at the trough edge. But the underlying cause of ice dams is heat loss through the roof deck, and addressing that requires attic air sealing and insulation. A guard is a useful piece of a broader plan, not a standalone solution.
Should I knock down the icicles hanging from my eavestroughs? Large, heavy icicles signal that ice dams are forming above them. Knocking them off can relieve some weight on the trough hardware, but be careful: pulling hard at a long icicle can bring mounting hardware or a section of trough down with it. If there is a substantial ice buildup backed against the roof, that is a job for a professional with a steam unit rather than a homeowner with a ladder.
Can ice dams damage my fascia board? Yes, and this is one of the more common ice-related repair items. Meltwater trapped behind a dam can run behind the trough and soak the fascia board beneath the shingles, especially if the trough has already started pulling away from the board. Rotted fascia needs to be replaced before new eavestroughs or a guard system can be properly mounted, so it is worth inspecting the board when you are assessing the overall condition of your roof edge.
Will replacing my eavestroughs stop ice dams from forming? New eavestroughs alone will not stop ice from forming, because ice dams originate from heat loss through the roof, not from the troughs themselves. What good eavestroughs and a quality guard do is give meltwater a clean, fast exit when temperatures warm, reducing overflow and interior water damage while the attic work addresses the source. Think of the eavestrough side as damage reduction, and the attic side as the actual fix.
