Alberta’s wildfire reality
Two events changed how Alberta homeowners think about fire risk. The 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire destroyed more than 2,400 structures and forced the evacuation of nearly 90,000 people. In 2024, Jasper burned, taking out roughly a third of the townsite. Both fires behaved the same way at the house level: wind-driven embers landed on rooflines, in eavestroughs, against decks, and started spot fires that grew faster than crews could chase them.
Alberta has more than 800 communities in the wildland-urban interface, the zone where developed land meets forest or grassland. That includes well-known places like Canmore, Grande Cache, Hinton, Drayton Valley and hundreds of smaller hamlets across the foothills, boreal fringe and Peace Country. For homeowners in those areas, wildfire is a credible risk, not a once-in-a-generation event.
Fire suppression has real limits. What matters most when fire is close is the condition of your home and your immediate yard.
What FireSmart actually does
FireSmart Canada organizes the ground around your home into concentric zones, each with specific actions tied to it. The science comes from decades of post-fire investigation: researchers who walked through burned communities found that most homes ignited from embers, not from direct flame contact. Those embers can travel several kilometres ahead of the fire front. That means a house can ignite while the visible fire is still far away, which is exactly why passive home hardening matters more than last-minute clearing.
Zone 0 is the first 1.5 metres directly against your home. Anything combustible in this zone becomes a direct ignition path to your wall, soffits and eaves. Zone 1 extends from 1.5 metres to 10 metres. Zone 2 covers 10 to 30 metres. FireSmart recommendations get progressively less intensive as you move outward, but Zone 0 and Zone 1 are where the returns on effort are highest.
Your roofline as an ember trap
The roofline collects embers two ways: they land on the roof surface itself and they collect in the horizontal troughs at the edge of the roof. Eavestroughs (also called gutters) are built to hold water, which means they hold debris just as efficiently. Dried leaves, pine needles and seed husks in an eavestrough are compacted dry fuel sitting right at the edge of your fascia. An ember lands in that trough, finds what it needs, and starts a small fire that reaches the fascia board before you notice.
The link between clogged eavestroughs and house losses in wildfires is not speculation. Fire investigators flagged eavestrough ignition as a significant factor in both the Fort McMurray and Jasper events. In communities surrounded by boreal forest, it is one of the highest-probability ignition pathways on a home.
Keeping eavestroughs clear is therefore a FireSmart action, not just maintenance. That means either committing to regular manual cleaning or installing protection that keeps debris out permanently. Soffit, fascia and the gap problem
The underside of your roof overhang includes the soffit (the horizontal face between the wall and the outer edge) and the fascia board (the vertical board the eavestrough attaches to). Most soffits are vented to allow attic airflow. Those vents are also openings where embers can enter and find dry wood framing inside.
FireSmart recommends non-combustible soffit materials in higher-risk areas, particularly fibre cement or metal. Vinyl soffit is less combustible than wood but is not as resistant as cement board. The gap between the eavestrough and the fascia board is another place embers can settle and smoulder. Eavestroughs that have separated at joints, that sag away from the fascia, or that have been damaged over winter all create that gap. Keeping them properly seated removes the vulnerability.
Zone 0: the metre and a half that matters most
FireSmart’s Zone 0 guidance is the most actionable and the most impactful per hour spent:
- Remove wood mulch within 1.5 metres of the foundation. Replace it with gravel, rock or bare soil.
- Move firewood piles away from the house entirely. Against the wall is a kindling pile at the worst moment.
- Clear dead plant material from against the wall and from under any deck or porch.
- Make sure the space under a deck does not collect leaves or debris between cleanings.
- Screen any vents that open directly to combustible spaces. Finer mesh screening on soffit vents reduces ember intrusion without blocking airflow.
An ember landing on bare gravel mostly just dies. An ember landing on bark mulch against a wood panel is a different situation.
Zone 1: thinning and spacing
Beyond Zone 0, the FireSmart goal in Zone 1 is to reduce surface fuel and break the ladder fuels that let a ground fire climb into the tree canopy. For a residential yard:
- Prune lower branches up from the ground (aim to remove branches below about two metres on trees near the house).
- Space trees and shrubs so fire cannot run continuously between them.
- Remove dead trees, standing or fallen.
- Keep grass mowed short through fire season, especially in dry periods.
Zone 1 work compounds when neighbours do it together. A block where several homes meet FireSmart standards is meaningfully harder for fire to move through than a single hardened house surrounded by unprepared lots.
FireSmart resources and grants in Alberta
Several Alberta municipalities offer free FireSmart home assessments through local fire departments or forest management offices. Canmore, Hinton and some Peace Country communities have run grant programs tied to specific hardening actions including roofline work. Programs change each year, so confirm directly with your municipality or the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry wildfire prevention resources.

Putting it together for your home
The practical sequence for an Alberta homeowner who wants to take this seriously:
- Get a free home assessment through your municipality if one is available. Most FireSmart communities offer them.
- Work Zone 0 first. Remove combustibles, replace mulch with gravel, clear under decks and against walls.

Does FireSmart guarantee my home will survive a wildfire? No, and any program that claimed otherwise would be misleading you. What FireSmart reduces is the probability of ignition from ember exposure, which is how the majority of homes in wildfire events actually catch fire. A home that meets Zone 0 and Zone 1 standards is meaningfully harder to ignite than one that does not, and that difference translates into real outcomes in post-fire surveys. It is a probability reduction, not a guarantee.

What eavestrough material is best for fire resistance? Aluminium eavestroughs are non-combustible and hold no fuel value on their own. The issue is not the trough material but what fills it. A metal trough packed with dried debris is a fire hazard regardless of whether the trough is aluminium or galvanized steel. The protection comes from keeping the trough clear, either through regular cleaning or a quality micro-mesh cover that excludes debris in the first place.
