The pine needle problem is specific to this region
Ponderosa pine drops needles year-round, but the heaviest fall comes in late summer, when they are also at their driest. The needles are long and fibrous, they compress into dense mats at the bottom of a trough, and because of their shape they slide straight through the openings of a standard coarse eavestrough screen. You can clip a hardware-store guard onto your troughs and still end up with a needle mat building up inside, because the openings are simply too wide to stop them.
